Do Iguanas Drink Water?

Sunday, March 28, 2010
Yes! Don't assume that they don't because if they need to, they certainly will. Many new owners never see their new lizard pet drinking so they don't think to offer water, however it is very important that you do. In two years, Iggy has never been interested in drinking water. She barely even licked it by accident. She has always been well hydrated because of the amount of water she takes in from her healthy diet, moisture in the air and foods we've purposely soaked in water. During the last few weeks, Iggy has barely eaten a thing. She is just concerned with getting out of her enclosure and looking out the window. Even if she shows any interest in a collard leaf, the attention is quickly diverted. So last night I put her in the tub for a soak and wouldn't ya know it, she started lapping up that water! I was amazed but also quickly realized, probably not a good sign : (

Overall, Iggy has calmed down a little bit. I'd love to start seeing her eat regularly again. I need to figure out a way to get her to become interested in food again. Any ideas out there! I hope I don't have to take her to the vet. It would be such an odd visit. "Why are you and Iggy here today?" "Well, Doctor, Iggy is so obsessed with looking out the window that she doesn't want to eat!"

So, back to the water drinking. I've heard a few people claim that iguanas never drink and that just isn't true at all. Even if your iguana rarely does or you've never seen him do it, why not just keep it fresh in the cage anyway? Water is the basis of life and I think offering water to any living thing is essential.
